SEMARANG. Village supervisory non-commissioned officers (Babinsa) are going door-to-door in Kalinyamat red-light district, Semarang regency, to remind sex workers of their medical check-up schedules.

“Excuse me Mbak [sister], today is your check up. Please, don’t forget about it. We will wait for you at the puskesmas [community health center],” Babinsa Chief Sgt. Sujio told the inhabitants of a brothel.

Semarang regency is home to at least four red-light districts, namely Tegalpanas (GP), Sukosari (Gembol), Kalinyamat (Bandungan) and Kopeng with a total of 787 commercial sex workers.

The head of staff of Military District Command 0714 Salatiga, Maj. Otok Kusnaniwoto, said the activity was conducted twice a week to help Bandungan puskesmas disseminate information on efforts to control the spread of HIV/AIDS.
