China’s Midea Hits 3 Million Units in Indonesia, Boosts Global Export Hub

KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA — China’s home appliance giant, Midea Electronics, has marked a major milestone in its Southeast Asian expansion by logging a cumulative output of 3 million manufacturing units and officially inaugurating its sprawling new production facilities in Indonesia.

The production milestone was celebrated alongside the grand opening of Midea’s expanded Residential Air Conditioner (AC) plant in Cikarang, West Java, on Wednesday (9/9/2026). Jack Ding, President Director of Midea Electronics Indonesia, emphasized that the 3-million-unit threshold serves as a strategic anchor for the company’s localized manufacturing ecosystem.

“We will continue to inject capital, strengthen our local footprint, and drive the growth of Indonesia's manufacturing index,” Ding stated on Friday (11/11/2026).

Massive Footprint Expansion and Export-Led Growth

Midea has aggressively scaled its Indonesian operations since 2023. The flagship Cikarang AC facility sits on a 51,405-square-meter plot, with plans underway to expand the building's operational area by 230%, growing from 13,000 square meters to a massive 43,000 square meters.

Beyond cooling systems, Midea operates a 17,000-square-meter Twin Tub washing machine facility, which will soon be upgraded to manufacture Top Loading categories. Meanwhile, its dedicated refrigerator hub in Karawang commands an extensive land area of over 150,000 square meters, handling everything from double-door units to heavy-duty chest freezers.

Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Industry, Faisol Riza, commended the tech giant's institutional footprint. Riza broke down the factory's cumulative 3-million-unit achievements as follows:
  • Air Conditioner (AC) Products: 2.25 million units (75.0% of total output)
  • Refrigerator Products: 1.00 million units
  • Washing Machine Products: 367,500 units
Crucially for global market observers tracking emerging market supply chains, Riza revealed that Indonesia has successfully transformed into a premium export springboard for the company. Up to 2026, Midea Electronics Indonesia has exported approximately 2 million units—representing roughly 66.6% of its cumulative output—to foreign markets across North America and the ASEAN block.

Strategic Compliance with Local Content Mandates

To foster a highly competitive business environment, the Indonesian government is leveraging strict regulatory frameworks, including mandatory Indonesian National Standards (SNI) and Domestic Content Level (TKDN) compliance. These policies ensure that global firms utilize the domestic supply chain rather than treating the country merely as a consumer market.

Ma Kai, President of the Residential Air Conditioner division at PT Jaya Refrigeration Equipment (Midea's operating partner), reaffirmed the company’s commitment to raising its dependency on local suppliers. The electronics giant intends to cement Indonesia’s role not just as a regional sales territory, but as a fully integrated, state-of-the-art production hub capable of servicing shifting global consumer demands under strict compliance and sustainable operational structures.
