Dr. Budi Santoso: From FISIP UNS to the Indonesia Red and White Cabinet



KONTAN.CO.ID - Dr. Budi Santoso, M.Si., an alumnus of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, has officially been appointed as the Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia in the White Cabinet.

This appointment is concrete evidence of FISIP UNS’s commitment in producing superior human resources (HR) who are professional and contribute to the advancement of Indonesia.

“On behalf of FISIP UNS, we congratulate and wish Dr. Budi Santoso, M.Si., success in carrying out his duties and responsibilities as the Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia. As a member of FISIP UNS, we are proud of this extraordinary achievement and hope it can inspire other alumni,” said the Dean of FISIP UNS, Dr. Didik Gunawan Suharto, S.Sos., M.Si., in Solo, Monday (10/21).


Didik Gunawan emphasized that FISIP UNS will continue to support its alumni in their career development.

The dean's office actively communicates with alumni who are members of FISIP UNS Alumni Association (KA FISIP UNS). FISIP UNS alumni are spread across various ministries and agencies, both at the center and regions, as well as becoming entrepreneurs and the best professionals in their fields.

"At the age of 49, FISIP UNS has a wide track record of alumni in various fields. The success of alumni is proof of the commitment of this campus in producing superior HR who can contribute more to Indonesia," he explained.

The FISIP UNS Alumni Association (KA FISIP) also conveyed its support and appreciation to Budi Santoso.

"KA FISIP UNS is proud of the extraordinary career of Mr. Budi Santoso who started from the bottom and is now holding the top position at the Ministry of Trade.

With his experience, dedication, and professionalism, we are optimistic that Mr. Budi can bring the Ministry of Trade to a higher level and contribute more significantly to the Indonesian economy in the future," said Chairman of KA FISIP, Reza Fahmi Riawan in Jakarta, Monday (10/21).

Reza added that the Ministry of Trade is a strategic ministry that plays a vital role in the Indonesian economy.

Budi Santoso’s appointment is a form of President Prabowo’s trust in the quality and ability of FISIP UNS alumni.

"FISIP UNS alumni are now spread across various ministries, agencies, and business sectors in Indonesia. We always remain united to stay harmonious and contribute to building our nation for the future of our children and grandchildren," concluded Reza.

Budi Santoso’s Career Journey

Budi Santoso is an alumnus of the Communication Science program at FISIP UNS, class of 1987.

He started his career from the bottom and held various strategic positions at the Ministry of Trade.

Some of the strategic positions Budi Santoso has held include:

  • Deputy Director of Creative Economy, Directorate General of National Export Development (2010)
  • Trade Attaché India (after serving as Deputy Director of Creative Economy)
  • Head of Program and Cooperation Section, Directorate General of National Export Development
  • Head of Data and Information Center (2017)
  • Director of Business Development and Distribution Actors (2017)
  • Head of Organizational and Personnel Bureau (2018)
  • Secretary General of the Ministry of Trade (during Minister Zulkifli Hasan's term)
  • Head of Financial Bureau (June 2020 - September 2020)
  • Head of Trade and Economic Representative Office of Indonesia (KDEI) in Taipei (September 2020 - December 2022)
  • Director General of Foreign Trade (December 2022 - August 2024)
Aside from his success in his career, Budi Santoso has also successfully completed his education up to the doctoral level.

He pursued his S2 in Public Administration at the University of Indonesia and his S3 in Communication Science at Sahid University, Jakarta.
