JAKARTA. A former Indonesian civil servant who was recently deported from Turkey sold all of his family’s possessions to finance their joining the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria. National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said on Friday that the former Finance Ministry civil servant, identified as Triyono Utomo Abdul Sakti, 40, was lured to join the extremist group because he and his family wanted to live in a sharia-based state. The family planned to go to Syria via Turkey. “They kept moving from one place to another in Turkey before being arrested together with 20 other people on Jan. 16,” Martinus said. Turkish authorities deported Triyono, his wife and their three children, aged 13, 8 and 6. They arrived at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali on Tuesday evening and were immediately taken into custody by the Bali Police.
