House to summon Sri Mulyani over Century bailout

A lawmaker from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Hendarwan, proposed on Wednesday an idea to summon former finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati over the Rp 6.7 trillion of state funds used to save the troubled Bank Century.

"PDI-P suggests the House of Representatives to summon Sri Mulyani to help us investigate what really happened behind the decision on the Bank Century bailout," Hendarwan said in a meeting between the House’s monitoring team on the Bank Century bailout case and former vice president Jusuf Kalla.

Hendarwan said that Sri Mulyani’s previous statement revealed that the now-defunct Bank Century collapsed because of internal issues. Sri Mulyani was deceived by the data provided by Bank Indonesia, Hendrawan added.

"It's obvious that the Bank Century bailout was a well arranged, silent operation to rob the country," he said.

Meanwhile House Deputy Speaker Pramono Anung, who led the meeting, said that the suggestion would be discussed in a smaller team at a later point. (Margareth S. Aritonang/ The Jakarta Post)
