Indonesia to Impose Coal Export Tax of Up to 5% Next Year, Finmin Says



KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA. Indonesia plans to impose a tax on coal exports of between 1% and 5% next year, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said on Monday.

The government may set different rates for different coal grades, he said without sharing further details.

Mining minister Bahlil Lahadalia previously said that the planned export duty will only kick in when coal prices hit a certain level.

Indonesia is a major exporter of thermal coal, with shipments reaching 555 million metric tons last year, according to official data.

Indonesia's finance minister said earlier that the coal export tax could raise 20 trillion rupiah ($1.2 billion) in revenues.
