It’s official: Jokowi wins



JAKARTA. Officials have certified the results of Jakarta’s gubernatorial runoff, declaring the victory of Surakarta Mayor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo over Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo in the race to be capital city’s next chief executive.

The Jakarta Election Commission reported that 4.7 million of 6.99 million registered voters went to the polls on Sept. 20 runoff for the runoff.

Just under 75,000 of the votes cast in the runoff were invalidated by the commission.


Jokowi and running mate Basuki Tjahaja Purnama gathered 2.4 million votes or 53.82 percent of the total, according to the commission’s final count, while Fauzi and running mate Nachrowi Ramli collected 2.1 million votes, or 46.18 percent.

Turnout for the runoff was 66.7 percent, up from 63.7 percent in the first round of voting on July 11.

In the runoff, Jokowi won majorities in the city’s five municipalities, while Fauzi only won Thousand Islands regency, the commission said.

The commission said it would officially name Jokowi as Jakarta governor-elect on Saturday, clearing the way for his inauguration on Oct. 7. (The Jakarta Post)
