Jakarta to increase parking fees, reduce parking lots

KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA. The Jakarta administration plans to increase parking fees while reducing the number of parking lots across the capital in a bid to encourage residents to use public transportation.

“In the future, we will tighten the parking system through two strategies. First, raise the parking fees. Second, reduce the parking lots,” Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said.

The administration will implement the policies soon after the revitalization project of pedestrian sidewalks and bridges was completed.

“So, more people will be coming to [the city’s thoroughfares] Jl. Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin by public transportation or walking,” he said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.

“A study [on the plan] is ongoing. Hopefully, it will be finalized by the end of this month. Insya Allah [god willing] the [policies] will be implemented next year.”

The policies have been included in the draft revision of Regional Regulation No. 16/2010 on parking fees, which will soon be passed by the City Council.
