Jokowi to build greenhouse in Marunda

JAKARTA. Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo visited Marunda low-cost apartments in North Jakarta on Monday to inspect the city’s proposed location for a greenhouse.

The Jakarta Administrative Buildings and Housing Agency is planning to build a greenhouse on a 640-square meter plot of land in the apartment compound to provide a place for residents to grow vegetables. The city also aims to boost the residents’ income through the initiative.

“They can farm various vegetables like eggplant and chili, and sell them to boost income,” Jokowi said.

He encouraged the residents to farm vegetables because they would not take too long to harvest and sell.

“The greenhouse will be a pilot project that we will replicate in other low-cost apartment compounds,” he said.

Agency head Yonathan Pasodung said that construction of the greenhouse would require at least Rp 200 million.

“But we won’t use the city budget as it will be funded by private companies in a corporate social responsibility scheme,” he said, declining to name the companies involved. (The Jakarta Post)
