Kimia Farma to construct new plant

JAKARTA. State-owned pharmaceutical company PT Kimia Farma will spend Rp 30 billion (US$2.6 million) on the construction of a plant that will produce pharmaceutical raw salt materials with a production capacity of 2,000 to 2,500 tons per year in Surabaya, East Java.

The plant construction aimed to meet national demand for pharmaceutical salt, which stood at 3,000 tons per year, said Kimia Farma’s secretary Djoko Rusdianto, adding that the plant was expected to help the company boost supplies of local pharmaceutical salt by 66.67 to 83.33 percent.

Kimia Farma would collaborate with state salt producer PT Garam to help supply raw salt materials, said Djoko as quoted by Tribunnews.com. Kimia Farma, however, would still have to import other raw drug materials, said Djoko.

“This [plant construction] is just the beginning of our efforts to produce our own raw drug materials,” said Djoko on Friday. However, Kimia Farma also expected to produce food grade salt as national demand had touched 320,000 tons per year.
