KPU anticipates flooding on polling day

JAKARTA. The General Elections Commission (KPU) has asked all regions where 101 provincial, regental and mayoral elections will take place on Feb. 15 to take necessary measures to anticipate flooding on the day.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted that heavy downpours will hit regions across the country on that day.

“We have suggested KPU offices in cities and regencies establish polling stations in areas that are not prone to flooding,” KPU commissioner Sigit Pamungkas told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

The commission has also asked regional KPU offices to erect tents at polling stations to ensure that polling takes place despite inclement weather.

“Polling stations can also be established inside buildings that would be more suitable for polling,” he added.

Separately, KPU commissioner Arief Budiman said he hoped bad weather would not affect the elections.

“According to regulations, an election can only be postponed if half or all areas in a particular region experiences flooding,” he said. (Callistasia Anggun Wijaya)
