KPU to name Jokowi president-elect on Sunday

KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA. The General Elections Commission (KPU) is set to name President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his running mate, Ma’ruf Amin, president-elect and vice president-elect in a plenary meeting on Sunday.

KPU chairman Arief Budiman said the commission expected the Jokowi-Ma’ruf pair and the losing presidential ticket Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno to attend the meeting, which would be held as a follow-up to Thursday’s Constitutional Court ruling.

The plenary is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the KPU headquarters in Central Jakarta.

“We will give each presidential candidate pair the chance to deliver an address at the event,” Arief said. “We also expect both [presidential candidate] pairs to attend a press conference together.”

Should Jokowi and Prabowo attend the event, it would be the first public meeting — and maybe a moment of long-anticipated reconciliation — between the two long-time political rivals since the April 17 election.

Arief said the KPU would invite political parties of both camps, government representatives, election watchdogs as well as the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and the Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) to the plenary.

The KPU has declared Jokowi-Ma’ruf the winner of the election with 55.5 percent of the vote, while Prabowo and Sandiaga Uno garnered 44.5 percent.

In the ruling on Thursday, the Constitutional Court rejected a legal challenge filed by the Prabowo ticket, which alleged widespread fraud in the election. The court’s ruling upheld the KPU’s official vote tally.
