Maritime axis wins praise

JAKARTA. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s vision to transform Indonesia into a global maritime axis has been lauded by the international community, with several countries offering to cooperate with the government to realize the vision, a senior minister has said.

“When the President attended the APEC Summit in Beijing and the G-20 Summit in Australia in November 2014, leaders of countries, namely Australia, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands and the US, said they were ready to cooperate with Indonesia in the fields of fisheries and maritime resource development as well as maritime infrastructure development and capacity building,” Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Indroyono Susilo said in Jakarta on Monday.

He was speaking in front of participants of an Indonesian representative heads’ work meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Jakarta on Monday.

Speaking to Indonesian ambassadors and consul generals, Indroyono said they aimed to focus on sea border limits, Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf limits between Indonesia and its 10 neighboring countries.

“We will immediately dispatch 12 research and survey vessels to collect hydro-oceanography data and sea biology and geology data that will be used in the negotiation of Indonesia’s sea border limits,” Indroyono said.
