Marty criticized over migrant worker data

JAKARTA. Lawmakers from the House of Representatives Commission IX overseeing manpower scolded Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa for failing to provide complete data on Indonesian migrant workers abroad. In a hearing with Commission IX discussing the Jeddah riot, Marty told lawmakers that there was no accurate data on the number of Indonesian migrant workers abroad."There is yet to be accurate data on our migrant workers abroad. However, we recorded 4,458,170 Indonesian immigrant workers abroad from January to December last year," Marty said.A number of lawmakers, including Indra from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), seized the opportunity to attack Marty."It's interesting to see that the minister doesn't have accurate and comprehensive data on our migrant workers abroad. How can the government protect the workers if it doesn't how many there are?" Indra said. (The Jakarta Post)
