Ministry to meet with airlines ahead of Idul Fitri to discuss airfares

KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA. High airfares remain an issue ahead of Ramadan, during which millions of people make trips to their hometowns.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, who has expressed concern about the high airfares, said he would invite representatives of airlines to discuss the issue.

"This week I will invite airlines to discuss airfares so that they offer proper prices," said Budi on Monday, while attending a coordination meeting to prepare for the annual exodus with stakeholders.

The number of people traveling by plane during the exodus is estimated to reach 5.78 million, up 3.17 percent from 5.60 million people last year.

Civil Aviation Director General Polana B. Pramesti said airlines were estimated to have a daily capacity of 397,879 seats for the exodus.

Polana said her office had identified several issues that might occur during the exodus, including those related to airline ticket prices, the implementation of baggage fee policies, lack of seats on aircraft, possible natural disasters, extreme weather and hoaxes.

“To anticipate the surge of passengers during the exodus, we will ensure that airlines are disciplined in following flight schedules,” she said, adding that the ministry would also conduct routine ramp checks and inspections to ensure flight safety.

She said her office would also allow airlines to extend their operational hours to provide more seats during the exodus.
