Miranda is the key, says Adang

JAKARTA. As his wife, graft suspect Nunun Nurbaeti, was questioned by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators on Monday, Justice and Prosperous Party (PKS) member Adang Daradjatun revealed new evidence that could implicate Miranda Swaray Goeltom in the bribery case that allegedly secured her election as Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor in 2004.Adang, a former National Police deputy chief, said that Nunun had been merely a middleman while Miranda was the mastermind behind the bribery.Adang said he was in possession of a voice recording of a conversation between him and four KPK investigators who questioned him on Dec. 30, 2010, that disclosed the true role that his wife had played in Miranda’s election.“They said the status of Nunun and Arie was the same. They considered them as couriers or mailmen,” Adang said as quoted by Antara news agency, referring to Ahmad Hakim Safari, a.k.a. Arie Malangjudo, one of Nunun’s staff at her company PT Wahana Esa Sejati.Nunun allegedly distributed Rp 24 billion (US$2.67 million) in the form of 480 traveler’s checks, each worth Rp 50 million, as bribes to more than 33 lawmakers and former lawmakers, in exchange for their votes for Miranda.Adang insisted that Nunun had no motive in the case, arguing that it was Miranda who instigated the bribery in order to win her own election. He called on the KPK to immediately investigate Miranda as a suspect.KPK spokesman Johan Budi said that Adang could come forward to hand over the recording to help the KPK investigate the case. The recording, however, could not be treated as primary evidence in the case, Johan said.He said that investigators would “get to the bottom of the case”.“I can assure you that the KPK will not stop with Nunun. But first we need for her to be cooperative and divulge all of the information she has,” Johan said.Previously, whistle-blower Agus Condro said it was unlikely that the bribe money had come from Nunun’s pockets. “As far as I can remember, Arie Malangjudo once testified that her company was in dire financial straits, so it is hard to believe that the checks came from her,” he said.Agus also suspected that there was one benefactor who had conspired with other investors in the game, wishing to place their people in strategic positions in the central bank to safeguard their businesses. He described the powerful figure behind Nunun as an “entrepreneur”.Responding to Agus Condro’s allegation, Johan also said that KPK investigators would pursue important players in the bribery scandal other than Miranda. “I think we should not limit the investigation only to Miranda,” Johan said. The KPK has said that it will summon Miranda for questioning and may even name her a suspect. She has already been questioned twice in regards to the case, including very recently. But the KPK also admitted that it had yet to renew a travel ban on Miranda that had expired in October this year.During interrogation at the KPK office on Monday afternoon, Nunun claimed that she was feeling faint. She was taken to Metropolitan Medical Center (MMC), a hospital adjacent to the KPK building on Jl. Rasuna Said, having spent just 45 minutes inside the KPK building.Johan said that Nunun’s blood pressure had spiked and that she had complained of headaches and light-headedness. She was later transferred to the National Police’s Sukanto Hospital in East Jakarta.Johan said that prior to bringing Nunun in for questioning, KPK investigators had come to the Pondok Bambu detention center in East Jakarta.“We saw that she was fit for questioning, so we brought her here,” he said.Nunun, who was arrested last week in Thailand, had fled the country in February, 2010, to seek medical treatment to cure “severe memory loss”, earning her the nickname “absent-minded Nunun”.
