Mt Sinabung eruption evacuees begin to return home



KARO. Many evacuees from Mt. Sinabung's eruption in Karo regency, North Sumatra, returned to their villages over the weekend as activity at the volcano lessened."The total number of evacuees from the Sinabung eruption in Kabanjahe disaster post on Sunday was 27,485," said the media coordinator of the Sinabung Disaster Mitigation, Jhonson Tarigan, on Sunday as quoted by Antara.According to Jhonson, there had previously been a total of 29,140 people evacuees, or 9,212 families, sheltering at the post.The returning evacuees went back to Rimo Kayu and Batu Karang villages in Payung sub-district."The villages that people are returning to are located in safe zones outside the 5-kilometer danger area. Their return was based on advice from the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center," Jhonson said.Of the 27,485 evacuees living at the shelter 12,625 are male and 12,856 female, as well as 209 elderly, 226 expectant mothers and 1,336 babies.The refugees hail from 34 villages and five districts in Karo regency.At least 17 people were killed in a pyroclastic cloud from Mount Sinabung earlier in the month.
