New import substitutions to be announced in September

KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA. A list of imported goods that will be subject to additional taxes will be announced within the next two weeks, said Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati in Jakarta on Friday.

She assured that no raw or manufacturing materials would be on the list, with all those listed being consumer goods and replaceable with local products.

“We have identified all the goods, but we are still examining the production capacity of domestic products and how (the policy) might affect local businesses,” Sri Mulyani told reporters on Friday at a press conference after a high-level meeting on inflation control.

The minister said the government had lined up approximately 900 categories of imported goods that might be replaceable with domestic products.

Currently, all imported goods are subject to 2,5% to 10% import tax.

Sri Mulyani declined to specifically mention the goods that would be on the list and the additional import tax that would be imposed.

She said the issuance of the list would be based on Finance Ministerial Regulation No. 132/2015 on the classification of imported goods and their import tax and Finance Ministerial Regulation No. 34/2017 on the collection of income tax related to the payment of imports and other business activities.
