Overseas Expansion, PHE Targets Oil and Gas Fields in Africa and South America



KONTAN.CO.ID - LOMBOK. PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) is planning to expand its oil and gas field portfolio abroad. After Malaysia, PHE will explore South America and Africa. 

“We are working with ENI, and also Petronas for the evaluation of several blocks in Africa and South America,” explained the Director of Exploration of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Muharram Jaya Panguriseng at the Media Gathering 2024 in Mandalika, Tuesday (6/2). 

Muharram stated that the evaluation is currently underway and it is hoped to find candidates that match the threshold calculation of jumbo oil and gas fields (big fish). 


Recently,  PT Pertamina Malaysia Exploration Production (PMEP) along with its partners successfully won the exploration block SK510 through the Malaysia Bid Round (MBR) 2023. 

The holders of Participating Interest (PI) in Block SK510 consist of Petronas Carigali Sdn. Bhd. acting as the operator with a PI of 40%, PMEP and INPEX Malaysia E&P SK510 Sdn. Bhd each have a PI of 25%, and Petroleum Sarawak Exploration & Production Sdn. Bhd has the remaining 10% PI.

Block SK510, covering an area of 1,864 km2 located offshore Sarawak, Malaysia, is a working area in the upstream asset management portfolio of PHE, as a Subholding Upstream of Pertamina. This acquisition brings the total to 6 blocks under PMEP's management.

PMEP, a subsidiary of PT Pertamina International Exploration and Production (PIEP), affiliated with PHE, manages oil and gas (oil and gas) exploration and production activities in the Sabah and Sarawak regions of Malaysia under the Production Sharing Contract (PSC) type of contract. 

PMEP has a Participating Interest in 3 production blocks – SK309 (25.5%), Block SK311 (25.5%), and Block K (24%), 2 exploration blocks – SK510 (25%), SK 314A (25.5%), and 1 development and exploration block— Block H (18% except for Rotan Field – 24%).

The Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development of PHE, Danar Dojoadhi stated that PHE will expand its working area through new exploration blocks, both domestically and internationally. 

“This is very important to maintain the sustainability of fossil energy resources,” he said in an official statement. 

PHE has also completed the acquisition of oil and gas blocks in several working areas including; Peri Mahakam & Bunga in the Eastern Indonesia region, East Natuna in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Vietnam border area, and Masela in Maluku.
